Through YoungOnes, you can find both freelance gigs and temp gigs via YoungCapital. These are not the same type of work.

With a freelance gig, you work as a self-employed professional. You’re not employed by YoungOnes or by the client. For example, you arrange your own taxes and pension, and you can negotiate your hourly rate.

With a temp gig, you work as an employee through YoungCapital. YoungCapital is your employer. Your hourly wage is fixed, and things like payroll taxes, holiday entitlement and pension are arranged differently.

In the app, you can see which type of gig it is before you apply.

Doing a freelance gig gives you the freedom to make your own choices. At the same time, there are things you need to arrange yourself, and you don’t automatically have the same rights as someone who is employed.

Here’s what you need to know.

You choose which gigs you take

You decide which gigs you apply for. You’re not required to accept a gig.

Your hourly rate isn’t simply set for you either. If you think the offered rate is too low, you can make a counteroffer when you apply. The client then decides whether to accept it.

Can’t do a gig after all? You can cancel within the cancellation period. If that period has already passed, you can arrange a replacement yourself through YoungOnes.

If a client asks you on location to do different work from what was described in the gig, you don’t have to agree to it.

You arrange your own taxes

As a freelancer, you’re responsible for your own taxes.

You report your income to the Dutch Tax Administration yourself. If you have a VAT ID, you’ll also need to file VAT returns. Through YoungOnes, you can do your first 3 gigs without a VAT ID. After that, you’ll need one.

You’re also responsible for keeping your own records. Invoices and other administration must be kept according to the applicable rules.

YoungOnes does not withhold income tax for you.

You don’t automatically get the same rights as an employee

As a freelancer, some things aren’t automatically arranged for you.

You don’t receive holiday pay or paid holiday days for your freelance gigs. YoungOnes and the client also don’t build up a pension for you.

If you can’t work because you’re ill, your income isn’t automatically continued in the same way as it is for an employee.

Freelance gigs also don’t give you the employee rights that come with an employment contract.

You are insured while working a gig

If you have a verified profile, you’re automatically insured through Onsi while working gigs through YoungOnes.

The insurance provides cover for liability and accidents during your gig. It also includes cover for incapacity for work.

Under the current scheme, to qualify for incapacity-for-work cover, you must have completed at least 10 gigs through YoungOnes in the 26 weeks before the accident or the start of your illness. The maximum benefit is €30 per day for up to 2 years.

If you want more cover than the insurance through Onsi provides, you’ll need to arrange that yourself.

You make your own arrangements for certain costs

Travel and parking costs aren’t automatically reimbursed separately. In principle, these costs are included in your hourly rate, unless you agree otherwise with the client.

Is freelancing not for you?

You can choose to apply only for temp gigs instead. In the app, you can see whether each gig is a freelance gig or a temp gig.
